MILDRED "MILLIE" SCHMIDT, 87 of Madrid, passed away Friday, December 21, 2018, at the Perkins County Hospital in Grant.
Millie was born December 13, 1931, at Inman, Kansas to Isaac and Elizabeth (Toews) Ensz. She attended school in Inman, and as a young lady, worked as a nurses aide at the McPherson Hospital. Millie would then spend a couple years in Mexico on mission work, where she served as a midwife, delivering more than 60 babies.
Following her mission work, Millie returned to Kansas where she eventually married John K. Goertzen on July 26, 1959. The couple made their home in the area where they farmed and raised their family. John passed away in 1974, and in August of 1975, Millie married Jake G. Friesen. The family moved to Madrid, Nebraska in 1977, where they farmed. Jake would precede Millie in death in June of 2007. On October 23, 2011, Millie married Clinton Schmidt, and the couple continued to reside in Madrid.
Millie enjoyed quilting and flowers. She was intelligent and mild-mannered. Years of raising children had made her both patient and strong.
Millie was preceded in death by two husbands; son-in-law, George; infant granddaughter, Alicia Dawn; three brothers, Wilbert, Ben, and Dave Ensz; three sisters, Rosella Penner, Alma Penner, and Margaret Riemer.
Millie is survived by her husband, Clinton Schmidt of Madrid; her children, Yolanda Friesen of Madrid, Sherry (Denton) Mastre of Grant, Barbara (Keith) Becker of Leesburg, OH, Danny (Barb) Goertzen, Wendel (Krista) Goertzen, all of Madrid; stepchildren, Marlin (Bonnie) Schmidt of Grant, David (Twila) Schmidt of Ronan, MT, Jerry (Minnie) Schmidt of Madrid; 24 grandchildren, 11 step-grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 3 step great-grandchildren; along with many other relatives and friends.
A memorial has been established in Millie's memory for later designation. Condolences may be shared at bullocklongfuneralhome.com.
Services will be on Monday, December 24, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at the Golden Plains Mennonite Church west of Madrid. Burial will be in the Madrid Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Sunday, from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the Bullock-Long Funeral Home in Grant.
