Mark Douglas Heil, age 52, passed away on May 22, 2022 after a long battle with colon cancer. Mark was a loved and cherished son, brother, uncle, and granduncle.
Mark was born on July 7, 1969 in Hastings, Nebraska to Linda Lou Hesman and Dennis Paul Heil and raised by Linda and Ken Kohmetscher. He graduated from Wheatland High School in 1987.
He was paralyzed in the fall of his senior year of high school requiring the use of a wheelchair. Despite this injury, Mark went on to live a full life, bringing joy, passion, and love into the lives of all he touched. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, graduating in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a focus in computers and information technology.
Mark was active in his community, and served on the Madrid Village Board from 2008 to 2018. He was an avid early-adopter of new technology and used his intelligence and knowledge to help his family and friends with all things technology related. His passions included music, with a focus on hair metal and rock and roll, books, movies, and Farmtown. He loved trees and flowers and his favorite flowers were blue, orange, and red. You could often find him sitting outside near his flowerbed reading a science fiction book. He loved all sports and at one-time or another participated in a fantasy league for just about every sport. While he loved the Lakers and Cowboys, his favorite team was the Nebraska Cornhuskers, supporting all sports, including men's and women's basketball, softball, baseball, volleyball and of course, football.
Mark was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ivan and Lola Hesman and Rita and Laverne Kohmetscher.
He is survived by his mother, Linda, father, Ken, his sisters, Dori Kennicutt, Melissa Wilson (Heil), and Joni Marr (Kohmetscher) and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
The family will hold a small celebration of life at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Village of Madrid Mark Heil Tree Fund, PO Box 171, Madrid, NE 69150. Condolences may be shared at bullocklongfuneralhome.com.
