LeRoy "Shorty" Griffiths, 85 of Wallace, passed away September 28, 2016 at his home east of Wallace.
LeRoy was born April 5, 1931 in Dickens, Nebraska to Leslie and Vera (Reed) Griffiths. He attended rural school in the Dickens area before eventually graduating from the Nebraska School of Technical Agriculture in Curtis with the class of 1949.
In 1951, LeRoy enlisted in the US Army, where he served during the Korean War. He was stationed in both Korea and Japan throughout the war effort, before his honorable discharge in 1954. On November 4, 1955, LeRoy married Edna Kramer in Morrill. Their union was blessed with 4 children. The couple resided in North Platte until 1960, when they moved east of Wallace to farm.
LeRoy was heavily involved in the community of Wallace for many years. From his volunteering with youth club baseball, to the Farmer/Rancher Banquet, to spending snow days clearing people's streets and walks, LeRoy sought to make a difference by giving of his time and effort. He was active in the American Legion, Wallace Rural Fire Department and 4-H.
LeRoy was preceded in death by his wife, Edna in 2015; his parents; brother, Eugene Griffiths; 3 sisters, Myrtle Goedecke, Rosemary Jones and Phyllis Connell.
Survivors include his three sons, Larry, of York, Randy (Linda), of Kearney, and Rod (Kristi), of Wallace; one daughter, Marilyn (Craig) Schmidt, of Olathe, Kansas; grandchildren, Jeff, Sarah, Lindsey, Cameron, Crystal, Ryan, Jackie, Anna, great-grandchildren; Haylee, Jace, Jossalyn, Avery, Kane and Karson; siblings, Emma Jane (Wayne) Roberts, Edith (Dennis) Ekdahl, Harold (Shirley) Griffiths; along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A memorial has been established in his memory for later designation. Condolences can be shared online at bullocklongfuneralhome.com, where the service will be streamed live for those unable to attend.
Services will be on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at 10 AM at the old Wallace High School gymnasium with Pastor Bob Witt officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at the Morning View Cemetery at Wallace.
Visitation will be on Friday, September 30, 2016 from 1pm to 5pm at the Bullock-Long Funeral Home in Grant, NE.
