GERALD D. BURGE, 76 of Madrid, passed away Thursday, February 16, 2017 at the Golden Ours Convalescent Home in Grant.
Gerald was born May 9, 1940 northeast of Madrid to Glen and LaVene (Jones) Burge. He attended Madrid High School.
Following his education Gerald worked on the family farm and assisted other area producers. In January of 1965, Gerald began working for Perkins County in road maintenance. Gerald's career with the county spanned over 45 years. Gerald finally stepped away from farming and road maintenance following heart complications in 2009. Shortly after his retirement, Gerald moved into Madrid for a few years. In 2012, he made his home at Westview in Grant. Most recently, Gerald made his home at Golden Ours Convalescent Home, where he received wonderful care.
Gerald was a hard worker, and logged countless hours in the field and on the roads. When the snow would fall, Gerald could be found plowing county roads from sun-up until sun-down, which was just how he liked it. Gerald loved animals, especially dogs. He raised sheep for most of his life, so appreciation for a good Blue Heeler was more than just a passing fancy. In his free time, Gerald enjoyed woodworking and trapping. He had a wonderful rapport with his nieces and nephews, and cherished time spent with them and their families. Gerald also had a special relationship with his mother who took good care of him; and who received wonderful care from Gerald in her own later years.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Ivor Bunting.
Survivors include his 4 brothers, Wayne (Nancy) Burge of Grant, Darrell (Rachel) Burge, Dale (Sharon) Burge and Butch (Donna) Burge all of Madrid; sister, JoAnn Bunting of Pleasant Hill, CA; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A memorial has been established in Gerald's memory for later designation. Condolences may be shared at bullocklongfuneralhome.com, where the service will be streamed live for those unable to attend.
Memorial services will be on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 10:30am at the Madrid United Methodist Church. Interment of cremains will be in the Madrid Cemetery.
Bullock-Long Funeral Home of Grant is in charge of arrangements.
